Using three measurement waves that covered a time span of 6 years, we conducted cross-lagged panel analyses. Overall, we found evidence that financial problems increase the risk of delinquency, and vice versa. Effects of delinquency on financial problems were larger than the other way around. In addition, a longer term (6 year) effect of delinquency on financial problems was found, whereas this effect was not found for financial problems to delinquency. Gender and age did not moderate the financial problem-delinquency link, suggesting that the bidirectional effect between financial problems and delinquency applies to adolescent and young adult males and females. Finally, we found some evidence to suggest that the indirect effects became stronger over time.enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessfinancial problemsdelinquencyadolescentsyoung adultsgenderLIFE-COURSE-PERSISTENTSTRAIN THEORYFIT INDEXESBEHAVIORCRIMEONSETLEADFinancial problems and delinquency in adolescents and young adults: A 6-year three-wave studyArticleGeneral rights Copyright and moral rights for the publications made accessible in the public portal are retained by the authors and/or other copyright owners and it is a condition of accessing publications that users recognise and abide by the legal requirements associated with these rights. - Users may download and print one copy of any publication from the public portal for the purpose of private study or research. - You may not further distribute the material or use it for any profit-making activity or commercial gain - You may freely distribute the URL identifying the publication in the public portal" Take down policy If you believe that this document breaches copyright please contact us providing details, and we will remove access to the work immediately and investigate your claim.https://www.scopus.com/pages/publications/8499124433013623854https://research.tilburguniversity.edu/en/publications/095b35b4-1407-463c-a997-ce5572095444(c) Universiteit van TilburgHoeve, MachteldJak, SuzanneStams, Geert Jan J.
