Abstract

Zwarte lichamen worden regelmatig gehinderd in een witte wereld, vrouwenlichamen worden afgeschermd en afgeremd in een misogyne wereld, dikke lichamen passen niet in een wereld die is afgesteld op het gemiddelde lichaam, berolstoelde lichamen kunnen niet met de trap, en depressieve lichamen worden inert omdat de wereld hen niet meer uitnodigt. De voorbeelden laten zien dat lichamen nooit op zichzelf staan. Ze functioneren altijd in relatie tot andere lichamen en tot de omgeving. Toch is de opvatting nog gangbaar dat je lichamelijke problemen kunt oplossen door te focussen op tekortkomingen in het lichaam, in het denken of in het gedrag van individuen. Filosoof Jenny Slatman legt uit dat deze aanpak onvoldoende werkt. Er is meer aandacht nodig voor de materiële relaties waarin lichamen staan. Ze pleit daarmee voor een nieuwe kijk op lichamelijkheid. Yet the view is still common that you can solve physical problems by focusing on shortcomings in the body, in thoughts or in the behavior of individuals. Philosopher Jenny Slatman explains that this approach does not work sufficiently. More attention is needed to the material relations in which bodies exist.
