Abstract
In this chapter, we address co-creation between the business community and academia, also known as Mode 2 research. The focus of our research is on HR/people analytics. Apart from highlighting Mode 2 research from a more theoretical perspective, we share with the readership the benefits and challenges of our real-life experiences with a number of companies participating in our People Management Center/Tilburg University. Companies have subsidized a number of Ph.D. students. Based on an evaluation with the main stakeholders such as company supervisors, academic Ph.D. supervisors, and, of course, the Ph.D. students themselves, we describe and evaluate mutual benefits, data availability, challenges and pitfalls, differences in time perspective, the political arena, and for the Ph.D. students, how to survive in both worlds. We conclude with lessons learned and recommendations. Quotes and examples of research outcomes in the domain of people analytics illustrate our findings.
