Abstract
This chapter provides a conceptual map of four closely related, yet distinct phenomena: extremism, fanaticism, fundamentalism, and terrorism. In order to do so, it describes, defines, and differentiates each of these four phenomena. Of course, different and equally valid conceptualizations and definitions are possible, given that they are needed in different contexts and for different purposes. Each section therefore clarifies the context and purpose of the conceptualization. The chapter then explores and displays the logical relations (entailment, exclusion, overlap, etc.) between these phenomena in a conceptual map. Finally, it sketches the ramifications of all of this for the academic debate and the practical consequences for policy and the public debate.
