Abstract
Recent news stories illustrate various firms’ irresponsible behaviors known as Corporate Social Irresponsibility (CSI). The three essays collected in this PhD thesis study how key stakeholders of a firm respond to firms’ irresponsible behaviors and how firms shape their response strategy. The first essay examines how the general public and shareholders react differently to the types of CSI incidents and highlights the critical role of the media in shaping the stakeholder reactions. The second essay explores how employees’ responses become more negative when a CSI incident violates their expectations of the firm’s integrity, and how a firm’s prior CSR engagement and the extent of media attention further influence these reactions. The third essay investigates how pressures from different stakeholders affect firms’ response strategy to CSI incidents.
