“Aroused and sustained by the Holy Spirit”? A Plea for a Pneumatological Reconsideration of Sensus Fidei on the Basis of Lumen Gentium 12

Abstract
The author wishes to contribute to the reflection on sensus fidei by highlighting an aspect of Lumen gentium’s teaching on this topic that is often dealt with superficially, or not at all, namely its pneumatology. Revisiting Lumen gentium, no. 12, he firstly demonstrates that the drafting process is not only marked by ecclesiological renewal, but also by pneumatological renewal. For at the same time as the role of the magisterium was reconceived in more inclusive terms, the Spirit’s role was substantially enlarged. Secondly, the author claims that grammar matters. If pneumatology is to have a more prominent, foundational role in the theological reflection on sensus fidei, a more appropriate grammar is needed. Noting that LG 12’s teaching on charisms is remarkably bold in articulating the Spirit as subject of the ecclesial reality, he proposes this teaching’s grammar as a model.
